Bookcase Railing DIY

We had a horrible rickety and rusted hand-me-down black metal clothes rail in our bedroom pretty much since we moved in. After seeing a few posts on Pinterest about DIY storage rails, I thought I'd give it a go!

I purchased two bookcases from Littlewoods in the sale, which were only £20 each. I then got a couple of screw-in railings from Amazon. I had thought about cheap tension rods, but as the bookcases are separate, I figured it might not really hold well and it'd come crashing down in the middle of the night :)

Using a bradawl I made pilot holes, which was very easy as it was just chipboard covered with a veneer. I screwed in the railings and voila :) easy peasy! Now we have loads more hanging space, and extra bookcase space too (for my husband's never ending comic book fetish). Sorry about the bad quality photo!

Easy Peasy Headboard Cover

We were gifted a lovely leather-look bed when we first moved in to this place around 4 years ago. It served us pretty well, until one of the slats broke, as well as where the slat slotted into (that's hard to say quickly!). As lovely as it was though, the bed was a normal double size and had a lip all the way around the edges making it even bigger, and in our tiny bedroom, it didn't really fit well. After having the bed for a couple of years we decided we'd get a new one, and get a small double to make better use of the space. This was brought forward somewhat by the breakage :)

We opted for a metal frame bed which in hindsight was a very bad idea. It is SO noisy. Turning over in the middle of the night is guaranteed to wake you (and your partner) up and trying to get out of bed quietly for pee so as not to wake your other half is impossible. But it was cheap, and it fit, so we got it.

Everything else in our bedroom is beech effect MDF wood, so a metal bed frame also didn't really go with anything. This was made even worse recently after my little project with the bookcase hanging rack (pictures to come later) which I made out of beech effect bookcases. So I decided I'd have a look and see what I could do with regards the headboard.

The headboard is also the legs, so removing it and having something wall-mounted was off the table. So I decided to try and cover the existing one. All kinds of ideas wafted around my head as usual, involving wood and foam and leaning how to do elastic fitted sheet style corners, but I settled on what is possibly the easiest DIY of all time.

For a change this didn't come from Pinterest (though someone else has no doubt done it) it came from my very own mind!

I purchased a double flat sheet in black, I figured black goes with everything. I folded over the sheet in half. I then measured the size of my headboard, and sewed up the outsides of the sheet at the right size. I cut off the excess and voila! Two seams and I'm done!

It's not the best workmanship of all time, but after ironing it, I reckon it looks pretty sweet. Here it is with the pillows in position. With the flash on, yes, you can see the metal slats. But without the flash, you can't. You also can't see pretty much of anything as it's dark right now :)

I'm going to make a couple of slipcover cushions to go on the bed too from the excess fabric from the flat sheet, so no matter what duvet cover we have on at the time, it'll tie everything together pretty easily. The flat sheet came from Linens Limited on Amazon, and was only 7.99, but seriously good quality. A lovely satin-y finish that looks pretty swish. Not bad, eh??

Decluttering

I'm very guilty of just living in the future. I always find myself saying "I'll do that tomorrow" or "life will be so much better when..." and I end up wishing away my days, when really, there's no reason that I can't just make the now better. Ok, it may be that I don't live in my perfect dream house right now or have the money to go here and there travelling when I want to, but there are things I can do to make my living space more homely - and more me - and cheaper days out and trips I can take for now.

For example I am continually pinning craft ideas and home decor ideas on Pinterest, and I've given a few of them a go, but most of them I have filed firmly under "For The Future". Living in a rented flat doesn't really lend itself to big projects, but I've decided that rather than just making do with the place as it is because I tend to move out eventually (in many, many years time no doubt) I should try and improve it as best I can.

The main issue at the moment is space. We are very limited in space. And that's largely my fault... but moving swiftly on, what I really need to do is declutter. Big style. I have so much JUNK that I have literally no idea what to do with (or where to put).

I found a series on decluttering on Pinterest which breaks it down in to small manageable chunks rather than the mammoth task of decluttering your house all in one go. It seems simple and, more importantly, achievable. Head over to the "From Overwhelmed to Organized" blog where the lovely! Hilda talks you through it all!

http://fromoverwhelmedtoorganized.blogspot.ca/2013/10/day-1-sock-drawer-31-days-of-easy.html

I'm going to give this a go, but it may be that rather than doing it every single day, I may save a few for the weekend (I can't possibly give up all my lazy time in the evenings after work!) and get a few done all in one go. But, tomorrow, I will be tackling our sock drawers with a vengeance!!

After decluttering and reclaiming space (and serenity!) I have a few projects in mind that I hope to be able to come to in the very near future!

"Minimalist" Christmas

I'm not huge on Christmas. I'm huge at Christmas, but I can't say I'm a massive fan overall. Not in a "bah humbug" kinda way -  it just all starts too early for me, with far too much expectation and hype. If Christmas didn't seem to start as soon as the schools go back in September, with shops starting to sell Christmas cards and wrapping paper, and then playing Christmas songs in November, I'd probably like it a whole lot more. But for me the expectation of the perfect gift, the perfect reaction, the perfect tree and decorations, the perfect food and company... it's all a bit much. I think it's amazing when you are little because your parents stress over every tiny little thing to make it perfect. when you're older and you have to do that yourself... meh.

Me.

Having said that -  I have bought some awesome presents this year and I look forward to eating more than my bodyweight in chocolate and turkey (not together!)

My husband has similar feelings in that it all gets a bit too much. We ended up not even having a tree last year, after moving the lounge around for a better fit with the furniture, we realised there wasn't actually any space left for the tree, and we didn't really have any other decorations to speak of so we just left it! How unseasonal of us!

This year though, and my favouritest shop in the world ever Poundland had some super cute decorations and I just had to get them! I actually felt a little bit festive while I was buying them! Shocking!

So instead of an all-out Christmas tree and trying to make everything perfect, I have gone for quite "minimalist" decorations -  unimposing but enough to make it clear that it's Christmas. I even got a little bit crafty and made a..... thing. Out of baubles!

Oh! The Possibilities...

For the past few weeks now, I have been pretty much obsessed with the Northern Irish Property News website that's similar to RightMove or PrimeLocation, but just for Northern Irish properties.

I have always wanted to live on the coast; there's just something special about being able to look out of your front window and just see the sea rather than someone else's house across the street from yours. To be able to take a walk on the beach in the evening, and have that fresh sea air when you walk out of your house every morning. In England, unless you're fairly well off, that dream is pretty much impossible. If you can see the tiniest glimpse of the sea from the tiny window in the bathroom, you're going to have to pay handsomely for it.

Not, it seems, in Northern Ireland. The property crash hit them more than most, with some houses that were worth over 200k now being worth less than 100k. Bad for them, good for me! I have recently been obsessed with what seems like a very quaint little area around Donaghadee and Millisle on the East coast of Northern Ireland, around a 35 minute drive from Central Belfast.

From Google Maps

The main reason I started to look there was simply because it was by the coast. The main reason I continue to look there is the price!! Now I don't profess to know anything about the area, but for these prices, it could be the scuttiest place on the planet and I'd still be interested!

From www.propertynews.com

Especially that first one, 70k and 5 bedrooms? Where do I sign!?

Now admittedly, the really cheap ones are in need of "sympathetic modernisation". For that, read "this place needs absolutely gutting". But that's actually a bonus for me - I don't want a perfect ready-to-move-in house that someone else has decorated and done up to how they like it. I would rather have a complete dive and need to rip everything out and start from scratch!

This house in particular has caught my eye, for both the above reasons - price and the fact its pretty much a blank canvas. This property has sea views right outside, and also views of a lighthouse and of a castle-like building, called Donaghadee Moat. A freaking castle! You can check out the full property listing here.

From www.propertynews.com

It doesn't look like much at the moment. It would need a LOT of work, but I've pretty much just been staring at it for a couple of days now, on and off, and I can see masses of potential. The main things I would do to the outside are:
  • relocate the Sky dish to the back or the side of the house, if possible, because it looks super ugly. Otherwise get a box, or get Virgin and remove it completely.
  • the house is lopsided in that it had two windows on the right there, and only the door on the left. I would either get a window put in there, or put something in its place to balance the house. A waggon wheel would look particularly cute!
  • paint the outside of the house, I think a lovely pastel yellow colour would look very nice. Use an extra durable masonry paint because of the sea spray in the air which will make it fade and chip faster
  • paint the windowsills and front door white and add some stand-out door furniture
  • add window boxes to the window sills
  • add something above the window, like some kind of coving to make the windows stand out rather than be sunken into the house. Maybe just a different paint colour, in a trapezium shape, or add fake brick cladding
  • re-pave the front area because the "smashed concrete" look just won't fly
  • add big pots to the front paved area (put in super heavy rocks at the bottom so chavs don't steal em) and put in some solar lights
  • add a little porch over the front door, because the front of the house is completely flat (a very 70s style)
  • get the neighbour to clean their house, because it looks scutty.

I think these additions would make a massive improvement to the "curb appeal" to coin an American phrase. I think its really important that your house looks good on the outside as well as the inside, because we all work so hard on the internal decoration of our houses. Why should the outside let it down?

This is only a two bedroom property, but the overall dimensions are good. And if we're honest with ourselves, its likely to only be the two of us for quite some time, if not forever, so having a spare room for guests is all we'll really need. We could however, if we were struggling for space, reclaim some of the bathroom which seems to be massive with no good reasoning. Remove the bath, move the strange shower arrangement and put it in the left corner, put the sink next to the loo, and the bathroom could easily be halved in size.

From www.propertynews.com

Downstairs orientation is a little difficult, because of the strange staircase. I would look into getting it replaced with a steeper one, so it doesn't jut out into the room quite as much, or maybe even a spiral (ooo!). Not sure how easy those thing's would be, but I'm sure I'd make it work. It definitely needs replacing with a more solid one, or at least one with a handrail. I don't really like that you can see between the treads either. The fireplace is coming right out, I hate fireplaces, especially big bulky ones like that. Its just taking up valuable space.

From www.propertynews.com

For some, the kitchen may be small, but for us it'd be a palace! Our current kitchen is so small that if you stand in the middle, you can pretty much touch all the walls. It would depend where stuff was in the kitchen, but I might move that door to the kitchen from the lounge to the other side, so I can put a big corner sofa under the stairs and along that wall, and have the TV wall mounted opposite the stairs. The kitchen itself is ok, its pretty dated but a lick of paint and new nobs on the cupboards and a bit of fitting for the white goods so they don't just look plonked there and it'd be absolutely fine.

Oh the possibilities. I have SO many ideas for the decorating of each room. If only we could move over there right now :(
